27th July 2018 A visit with Stroud U3A Church History and Architecture Group
The Parish Church of St James the Elder is next to Horton Court, but some way from Horton village. There is evidence of a medieval village near the church
The church originated in the 12th century, was rebuilt in the 14th century with later alterations and restoration.
In the two storey porch is a rib vaulted ceiling with carved bosses
and capitals of minstrels and beasts
12th century font re cut in 17th century
Jacobean pulpit on 15th century base, reached by the rood stairs
Next to the church is Horton Court. This part of the house was built about 1521
There is a part that was built in the 12th century (next to the church)
The round head doorway is Norman
Italianate ambulatory built about 1528
