Whitby has an old fishing village and an ancient abbey on the east side of the River Esk, with a tourist resort on the west cliffs. Bram Stocker gained inspiration from staying in Whitby when writing his novel Dracula

Replica of HMS Endeavour, which Captain Cook sailed in 1768. He started his naval career in Whitby.

Old Whitby has narrow lanes

There are 199 steps up to the abbey

These are the remains of the abbey from the 1200s, although there was an abbey here in 657.

After the reformation, the abbot’s lodgings were made into a house, but the roof was removed in the 1600s. Now there is a youth hostel and cafe behind the house

It was misty

The old church by the abbey

still has galleries with external stairs, high box pews and a three level pulpit
